CONCRETE ORIGINALS: Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why choose concrete over granite or marble?
Hand Sculpted
Concrete is much more versatile than other materials because of its ability to be molded into almost any shape. Sculpting our concrete products by hand allows us to add inlays of glass or metal to create beautiful, functional focal points such as heat racks or drain boards.
Color & Finish
The color and finish of concrete is more balanced and uniform then the busy appearance of granite or marble.  With concrete, the exposure level of aggregate can be controlled which means you can choose specific areas of added interest, such as a backsplash or an inlayed glass aggregate tile.

2. Is there any maintenance required with concrete countertops?
No, our countertops are sealed before they are installed and no maintenance is required for the life of your countertops.

3. How do I clean my concrete surface?
We suggest any non-abrasive household cleaning product and non-abrasive cleaning pads. Simple green and natural soaps work great and are completely safe. Citrus based cleaners are not recommended. [ Concrete Care ]

4. Will hot pots and pans affect the surface of my countertops?
Our countertops are heat resistant up to 400 degrees, however a built- in heat rack or trivet can provide a great focal point and a truly safe area to put rest hot pots and pans. [ Custom Features ]

5. Will my countertops scratch?
Our countertops are scratch resistant, although we don’t recommend cutting directly on your countertop. In some cases the sealer may be damaged.  We recommend using a cutting board when preparing food.

6. What color choices are available?
We have created our own custom color selection.  We have 36 colors to choose from.  Our samples are created by blending concrete color, layering concrete stains, and adding recycled glass into our mixes. We can match almost any color and are happy to create custom samples for our projects. [ Color Samples ]

9. What is the time frame of a concrete project?
The time frame is dependent on the scale and complexity of the job.  From start to finish an average of 3-6 weeks should be expected due to the natural curing process of concrete.

10. How is my countertop/sink installed & is there a fee?
We deliver and install all our concrete projects locally.  Local delivery and installation is absolutely free.

11. Will concrete cabinets support the weight of concrete countertops?
Most likely, yes. Concrete weighs only slightly more than granite. Our concrete countertops weigh 18.75 pounds per square foot at 1.5” thick.  Granite weighs 18 pounds at the same thickness.  If for design reasons a thicker appearance is desired the countertop can have the appearance of a 6-8 inch slab while the majority of the countertop (the back and center) is only 1.5” thick.  This gives the appearance of a great mass yet keeps the weight down.

We are happy to offer support solutions for your existing cabinets if the weight of your countertop project is a concern.

12. Will concrete crack?
Hairline cracks may occur during the creation of your concrete product or over time due to the natural shrinkage of the concrete.  Hairline cracks are not structural.  They are purely decorative and create a natural, organic surface. We use a variety of reinforcement materials and techniques to guarantee against structural cracking.

13. Do you provide a warranty?
